Transforming Together Time: Family Gaming and the Future of Play
LiveArea at Comic-Con
July 21, 2020
With most events taking place virtually this year, San Diego Comic-Con is following suit replacing the iconic in-person event with Comic-Con@Home. More than 350 presentations will be featured attracting audiences from around the world. At the event LiveArea Strategy Director Valerie Vacente will lead a panel discussion, Transforming Together Time: Family Gaming and the Future of Play on Thursday, July 23, 2020, 10:00 a.m. PDT.
In a discussion covering how gaming creators are designing new experiences across various platforms and emerging technologies, the panel will also feature gaming innovators Tommy Palm, co-founder and CEO of Resolution Games, and Tommy Tallarico, CEO of Intellivision and Video Games Live. In addition to a conversation centering on gaming, Val will lead a discussion on the intersection of gaming and commerce.
Culture, creativity and connection
Video games are an influential part of our culture, creativity and connection – especially now as family “together time” is on the rise as a result of the pandemic. The global market is booming with the ranks of players predicted to reach three billion gamers estimated by 2023. Verizon recently reported a 75% increase in gaming traffic, and, according to a recent study by Hasbro, 96% of families playing games feel closer.
“With all of the family togetherness during lock down, it’s no surprise that parents are looking for more ways to keep their families engaged and entertained from within the home. We are seeing exponential growth across VR, AR, Voice and Interactive Gaming Market in addition to PC, mobile and console platforms. Families are spending more time gaming together in more new ways than ever before,” Val said.
On the connection to commerce, Val continued, “As gaming and play evolves, so does the way consumers engage and purchase gaming experiences from the initial game play demo, to power up experiences with in-app purchases. The most forward-thinking creators continued to test and learn to find the right fit for the right consumer and gaming experience.”
Resolution Games, for instance, has applied the “test-and-learn” approach and has had numerous successes: Bait! is free-to-play and one of the most successful VR games in history. Angry Birds Isle of Pigs VR is an affordable 14.99 and Acron Attack of the Squirrels is $19.99 and allows for up to eight players to play together with a free companion app bridging VR and mobile multiplayer experiences.
In a market where consoles have historically been high-priced along with the games to play with them, Intellivision is taking a different approach combining the best of console gaming and mobile gaming to bring and affordable experience to consumers with their new console Amico. An Amico system with two controllers and six installed games will retail for around $249 at launch — all additional games will be priced between $2.99 and $9.99. Mobile devices can also be connected to Amico game play with a free companion app allowing up to eight total players.
Transforming Together Time: Family Gaming and the Future of Play will feature real-world examples behind some of the most beloved family gaming experiences. Attendees can find out more about the exciting work from Resolution Games and Intellivision Entertainment.
“Comic-Con is one of the most significant cultural events on the planet. And, VR is quickly emerging as the ultimate platform where core gamers, sci-fi and fantasy fanatics, and others can immerse themselves in their favorite worlds. Fans can also engage with their favorite characters and games like never before by actually being in the experience. Seeing these two come together is an exciting sign for what’s to come,” said Tommy Palm.
“It’s always a huge honor to be a part of Val’s panels. She always brings in the biggest and brightest people at the top of their industries and her commitment to family and fun is boundless,” said Tommy Tallarico.
Attendance is free and access to the panels can be gained by registering for each event.
